From Chevy trucks, to Louisville Sluggers and Hersey’s Kisses, it’s no secret that people like to purchase products that are made on our own land and by our own hands! What’s better than products made in America? Products that are made right in our own backyard! If given the opportunity, I love to buy products that my fellow Arizonian people have made! I find joy in knowing that my friends and neighbors are working hard to put out amazing products that everyone will enjoy.

This month we are talking about things that are “Made in Arizona.” Something that I discovered and you will too is that Cold Stone Creamery was started in Tucson, AZ! Now Cold Stone is all over the world! As the summer months roll in, be sure and stop in at your local Cold Stone Creamery to cool down and taste the creamy goodness of Arizona’s own delicious “creation.” You will read more on Cold Stone Creamery in one of our feature articles this month!

Also, be sure to check out the hot spot column. Featuring Tavern Americana, this restaurant is sure to impress. Using locally grown products, the food at Tavern Americana is sure to pack a punch of pure flavor. While enjoying the amazing food, take a seat at the 25 ft. long bar complete with a flat screen TV for game watching. The contemporary atmosphere along with the friendly service and great food will leave you wanting to go back for more.

Don’t forget about Dad this month too! It’s important to make this guy feel special on his special day! You can get great gift ideas for Dad in our Bits & Pieces section as well as our calendar of events. Be sure to check out what else is going on in our calendar for events that you definitely won’t want to miss out on, especially Mighty Mud Mania!

Just one more thing that I think will blow you away is our feature on the Rally Fighter. Guys, you’re really going to dig it! This car is unlike any other! Some even say it looks like Batman’s “Bat Mobile.” This car will make anyone look good no matter what kind of terrain you’re driving on! And the best thing about it, is that it’s made right here in Arizona. It doesn’t get much cooler than that!

This issue is full of amazing places and products that are Arizona based! I don’t know about you, but as I said before, I find tremendous pride in that! I invite you to think outside the box, create, invent, and discover. You might come across something that sparks and idea for your own creative and innovative “Made in Arizona” product. It all starts with just a pinch of imagination and a dash of creativity. Add a lot of hard work and who knows? Maybe we will see your “Made in Arizona” product around town in the future!

“PROBIOTIC” IS A FANCY TERM OF LATIN ORIGIN that means “for life.” Traditionally used for digestive health, probiotics are live, active bacteria—good bacteria.

Probiotics are finding a new niche in your dentist’s chair. Oral probiotics can help control disease carrying pathogens. Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), for example, is the result of pathogens attacking small food particles and probiotics help reduce the growth of those pathogens. In fact, probiotics may help to reduce the risk of everything from gingivitis to bad breath. Studies on the role of probiotics in dentistry as far back as 2005 have said, “Because of the increasing global problem with antimicrobial drug resistance, the concept of probiotic therapy merits further research.” And new research is finding that probiotics could indeed lead to strategies for cavity protection and control “due to their inhibitory action against cariogenic streptococci (cavity-causing bacteria)” and that “daily intake of probiotic supplements may control common oral and dental infections.”

The key is the ability of probiotics to regulate pH levels in the mouth, which can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Regulating the pH levels can help prevent plaque buildup, which often leads to gingivitis and other problems.

As you might remember from high school chemistry, pH is the measure of acidity or basicity in a solution. Water is a neutral substance with a pH of 7.0. Solutions with a level of less than 7.0 are acidic. When the pH level (or level of acidity) drops below 5.5 pH, acids can begin destroying your teeth and cavities can form quickly. Normally, healthy saliva can buffer the acids to neutralize the damage by increasing the pH to the 7.0 level.

Basic science shows us that proteins in the saliva can raise the pH saliva, there- by buffering the acid and making it more neutral. However, our saliva changes every time we consume different foods and drinks. And our saliva does not always protect our teeth and mouth from acid attacks.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. After eating, rinse your mouth with water for seven seconds. Do this within seven minutes of eating.
2. If possible, stay away from acidic foods when you can’t get to a toothbrush.
3. Use non-foaming toothpaste and tongue gels to clean the mouth and limit the number of pathogenic bacteria and the biofilms they live in.
4. Use mild alkaline mouthwashes twice a week to maintain a neutral mouth environment and avoid the acids that come from everyday living.
5. Use floss to clean the gingival pockets and prevent their colonization with pathogenic periodontal bacteria.
6. Take a daily dose of oral probiotics to down regulate any cytokine release occurring from bacteria and toxins that form in plaque and tartar we failed to clean away.
7. Visit your dentist a minimum of twice per year for regular check-ups.

Market Street Dental is located at 20875 North Pima Road, Suite 105 Scottsdale, AZ 85255.
WHEN I PULLED UP TO TAVERN AMERICANA, I WASN’T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT as images of tavern’s I had visited in Europe were dark neighborhood watering holes; a quiet place where people gathered to socialize, play darts, drink and eat. I found Tavern Americana to be open, contemporary and friendly with a wonderful selection of fresh, flavorful food!

Having gained much success with their first restaurant, TK’s Urban Tavern, located in the Scottsdale Quarter, Brian Pierce, Patrick Fegan and Tom Kelly, of the Urban Tavern Group, decided to expand north with a similar concept. Tavern Americana opened last November with the same contemporary décor, great food and fair prices.

BRING OUT THE FLAVOR; DON’T MASK IT

“As restaurateurs, it is our responsibility to buy and support locally produced and grown products,” says Pierce. These include pork, pastrami, beer, bread, ice cream and organic produce from local farmers. Chef Patrick likes to keep his recipes pure and simple. Pure, flavorful items used so that you can actually taste the true flavor of each item you are eating.

I was in for a real treat when I sampled the roasted tomato soup with homemade croutons – wow, delicious! It had a thick purée consistency with a deep, beautiful red color. It was too good not to finish before sampling the next item. The roasted golden beet and goat cheese salad consisted of firm, locally grown organic beets served with arugula, toasted almonds and red wine vinaigrette. It was just a few simple items, filled with wonderful flavors. The salmon fillet is a must try for salmon lovers – a generous piece served over spinach and fresh veggies with chipotle sauce. It was very moist, flakey and sooooo good! Another must is one of the wood fired pizzas. I tried the roasted chicken pizza with basil pesto, sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese and fresh oregano. The homemade pizza dough and crust was delicious. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Other items that caught my interest were the house specialties – the chipotle shrimp, served with creamed leeks, pearl onions, bacon and country bread; the sweet potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cream and sautéed spinach and grilled corn; and the pulled pork sandwich with Havarti cheese and house made apple slaw on a toasted baguette. All sandwiches come with a small salad or hand-cut roasted fries and a very tasty house made ketchup.

And, for those with a sweet tooth, try the Noble local craft ice cream for dessert. The flavors change with the seasons but all are super, creamy with flavors like peach, berries and salted caramel.

25 FOOT LONG BAR WITH CRAFTED BEER ON TAP

With an extensive beer list of 24 draft handles and hand-crafted beer on tap, specialty cocktails, and a great wine list, you will want to hang out here to visit with friends or catch the game on the big screen TV. For the wine lovers, there’s a wine lounge to enjoy your choice from the impressive wine list and/or you can visit the beautiful wine cellar where you can purchase a bottle or two of your favorite wine to take home.

UPSCALE AND SIMPLE

Pierce states, “It is our goal for our restaurants to provide good food, good service and good atmosphere. The challenge is to do all three every day, for every customer!” The passion for what they do and their dedication is obvious in the food and service they provide. The word is quickly getting out about this local tavern where good times and good food are enjoyed by all.

I was amazed at how spacious the restaurant was with high tables and stools in the bar area and nicely spaced tables in the dining room which overflows onto the patio (weather permitting) where sunset views are great. The breeze coming from the patio was wonderful as the walls of windows can be raised for seamless views. A private dining room housing tables, chairs and couches is perfect for those special celebrations.

This family friendly tavern offers a nice selection of items on the Kids Menu and on Tuesday’s after 5 p.m., kids eat free. Be sure to check out the Happiest Hour Menu serving specially priced beer, spirits and wine from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and specially priced food items from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

LOCAL MOTORS, INC. IS MORE THAN A NEW AMERICAN CAR COMPANY. It is more than the maker of the iconic, 50-state street legal, off-road desert racing-capable, Rally Fighter. Local Motors is driving America’s third industrial revolution and changing the way cars are designed, built, bought and owned.

This revolution began in Wareham, Mass., in 2007 when Local Motors Co-Founder and CEO John ‘Jay’ Rogers set out to start a car company. His idea was NOT to compete with the likes of the ‘Big Three’ (GM, Ford and Chrysler), but to completely disrupt the way things work in the automotive industry. His goal: to deliver locally relevant vehicle solutions to local markets, built with local resources, and do it faster, cheaper and more efficiently than anyone else. He wanted to completely change the paradigm related to designing and delivering new vehicles to market.

He wasn’t, however, simply looking to start a new American car company that would deliver the next big automotive one hit wonder (think Delorean or Tucker Torpedo). In fact, Local Motors has never been on a quest to develop that ONE new design that everyone in the world will want en masse. And… they never will be. Why not? Because Jay Rogers and the entire team at Local Motors (now more than 50 strong) believe there is no “one-size-fits-all” vehicle solution; that the world doesn’t really need MORE cars… it simply needs better cars, purpose built for the environment they are in. That’s where the ‘Local’ in Local Motors comes from.

THE RALLY FIGHTER

The now iconic Rally Fighter began its path to awesomeness as a sketch submitted to Local Motors by a Korean-born student at the Art Center in Pasadena named Sangho Kim. Kim’s submission was to a Local Motors-run competition being held on the Forge, home to the company’s community of automotive designers, engineers, fabricators and enthusiasts. The challenge was to design an off-road vehicle for the American Southwest.

Once chosen, the Local Motors team worked with their online community and had the first Rally Fighter ready in less than 18-months (a far cry from the 5-7 years it takes ‘the Big Three’ to design and manufacture a car. The company was still located in Massachusetts at the time, not an ideal place to build and sell desert cars. So Jay packed up and moved to a facility on the Gila River Indian Reservation and opened the company’s first Micro-factory.

THE MICRO-FACTORY

When you walk in to the Local Motors Micro-factory in Chandler – and any one can… at any time – it doesn’t look anything like what you’d expect. There are no conveyor belts or big assembly arms, and no painting robots. Purpose-built for low-volume manufacturing, the Local Motors Micro-Factory represents a completely different approach to automotive manufacturing. What’s so unique is what goes on inside the Local Motors Micro-factory. Its spot process innovations earned it a spot as one of the 10 most impressive car factories in the world,’ according to Gawker Media’s automotive weblog, Jalopnik

MORE THAN JUST A CAR

The Local Motors Rally Fighter is a 50-state street legal power- house designed to be used equally as an at home, morning commute, dropping the kids at school car, and as an off-road car used for weekend adventures in the desert. It’s the company’s flagship example of what is possible when American innovation meets a community of talented and thoughtful designers, engineers, fabricators and passionate automotive enthusiasts.

Buying a Rally Fighter is more than just buying a car, too. It’s an experience. Rally Fighters are built to order. When you purchase one of these vehicles, you also get a one-of-a-kind Build Experience. Designed for any skill level; the novice, the automotive enthusiast, or the professional builder, you will work alongside our team of experts to build your Rally Fighter from the ground up.

Buyers can choose either a 1-week Build Experience or two 3-day build sessions, and will contribute to more than 50% of the vehicle’s build. From final assembly of the Chevy E-ROD LS3 engine, to running the brake lines, from installing the transmission, to selecting the interior options, and designing a one-of-a-kind custom car skin, everyone who owns a Rally Fighter drives off our lot in a car that is an extension of themselves, an expression of their love, and with all the benefits of life in the American Southwest.

The Local Motors Rally Fighter is Made by You, in Arizona, USA.

ABOUT JAY ROGERS

A car guy through-and-through, LM CEO Jay Rogers grew up a student of the industry. His grandfather owned the legendary Indian Motorcycle Company and was the first Cummins Engine Distributor in the United States. Rogers graduated from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar). His career has taken him from a startup in China to Ewing & Partners where he became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), to McKinsey & Co and the US Marine Corps where he served for 6 years as an Infantry Company Commander.

It was Jay’s family history and personal passions that inspired the most ambitious plan behind Local Motors: To lead the next generation of crowd-powered automotive technology, design and manufacturing in order to enable the co-creation of game changing vehicles.
