“Expression & Dialogue: Dan Pederson & Thuong Nguyen” Slated for Royse Contemporary
Royse Contemporary is excited to announce “Expression & Dialogue.” This exciting exhibition will feature the mixed media assemblages of Dan Pederson and abstract paintings of Thuong Nguyen. “Expression & Dialogue” highlights a thought-provoking collection of work from these two artists may appear aesthetically different but have an undeniable connection and energy that unites their work. Through the raw and expressive work of Pederson combined with the powerful dialogue of Nguyen paintings, this unique pairing of artists is stimulating yet harmonious, owner and curator Nicole Royse says.
East Valley-based artist Pederson creates engaging work that centers around “color, layers and the organization of clutter.” Pederson received his bachelor’s in music from Chapman College. He has exhibited his work extensively in Arizona at such venues as the Chartreuse Gallery, the Icehouse, the monOrchid, R. Pela Gallery, Tieken Gallery and Art Intersection.
Phoenix-based artist Nguyen creates alluring paintings that draw inspiration from Asian landscape paintings that utilize black ink and brushstrokes much like calligraphy painting. Nguyen received a bachelor’s of fine arts in sculpture from Arizona State University. He has actively exhibited his work around the Valley showing with such venues as Art One Gallery, The monOrchid, Estrella Community College, Olney Gallery, Herberger Theater and modified Arts.
“Expression & Dialogue” will be on view through Saturday, December 2. Royse Contemporary is located in the Marshall Square complex at 7077 E. Main St., Suite 6, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. For more information, visit RoyseContemporary.com.
Tomaso’s…When in Rome Opens Their Doors To The Vi at Silverstone Nite Owls
A night on the town is always fun, and recently, The Vi at Silverstone Nite Owls visited Tomaso’s…When in Rome. This group enjoys dining at a local restaurant once a month, and they didn’t have to go far to enjoy an evening of delicious, authentic Italian fare. The restaurant is chosen by the committee chairpersons with suggestions from the participants, and the group is limited to 24. Transportation is provided to the restaurants, and it allows the participants to enjoy a cocktail without worrying about driving home. Besides enjoying the cuisine, the camaraderie with other residents is an added benefit to the monthly night out. NDP Is Upgraded to CRS Platinum Level Global High School
Notre Dame Prep was recognized as a Platinum Level Catholic Relief Services Global High School, dedicated to advancing Catholic social teaching and compassion for the poor worldwide. Before attaining platinum status, NDP was a Gold Level school.
To achieve the Platinum Level, NDP was required to complete an annual survey, participate in the CRS Rice Bowl Program during Lent, hold two schoolwide faith events and one core program. Another requirement is that Notre Dame Prep acts as a role model to other Catholic Schools. Notre Dame Prep went above and beyond the requirements.
NDP’s schoolwide events include Eucharistic processions, adoration, schoolwide rosary and a build-your-own CRS event. The core programs include either a food fast (simple food day), hosting a CRS fair trade consignment sale, advocacy for the voiceless or helping with CRS global emergency responses.
“To be platinum, we have to do one of these events,” Leslie Gjerstad, director of Christian service learning, says. “We do all of them.”

Chrysalis’ Wonderland’s 15th Anniversary
This holiday season, believe. Believe in hope, believe in childhood magic and believe in your ability to create wonder this season through Chrysalis’ Wonderland holiday program. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Chrysalis’ Wonderland. Wonderland has offered joy and magic to more than 3,000 victims of domestic abuse and their children during what can be a difficult and dark time.
Wonderland 2017 has two components. The first is a Polar Express-themed holiday carnival for residents of emergency shelter and transitional housing, featuring themed arts and crafts, games, food, entertainment and other fun surprises. The second is a donation drive to provide gift cards to clients, empowering them to shop for their families for the holidays.
With the help of the community, Chrysalis provides each client with enough gift cards to purchase gifts for their children, as well as cook a holiday meal. Donors can sponsor a child for $50, sponsor an adult for $25 and feed a family member for $15. There are also opportunities to sponsor different aspects of the holiday carnival.
Chrysalis, a 36-year-old Arizona agency, leads the community to broad-based solutions to prevent domestic abuse. The lives of more than 1,400 individuals are impacted each year. Services include crisis shelter, transitional housing, outpatient counseling, offender treatment, victim advocacy and lay-legal support.
