Functional, Luxury Living With Heart 9

28009 N. 90th Way

Mark and Bev Nuessle toured 50 houses in search of the perfect place before deciding to build. When they finished their masterpiece, they had an elegant and functional European-style home imbued with old-world charm.

“We spent three years drawing, three years building and we got just what we wanted,” Mark Nuessle says.

The 15,600-square-foot Scottsdale home in the Merit Crossing community is located on 3.3 acres. Enter the private property through iron gates, drive over a wooden bridge and behold the mature landscaping and enclosed courtyard with a large pool fountain.

“There are tons of details throughout,” Mark says. “When you walk through the entry you can see Pinnacle Peak mountain, dead center.”

The house was rotated to encompass views of Pinnacle Peak, which can also be seen from the living room, family room and master bedroom. The home has six bedrooms and nine baths. The guest house, adjacent to the pool, has a large, open room, full kitchen, laundry and two baths.

Mark and Bev have hosted many events, including seven fundraisers in honor of Hope Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to children with life-threatening medical conditions. They can comfortably seat 250 guests in their backyard. Outdoor spaces include three expansive covered patios, a gazebo, fire pit and fireplace. There’s also an 18-hole putting green created by a PGA pro, a heated pool and spa. Guests can enjoy mountain and city views with total privacy.

“We enjoy our home, but if we don’t share it, we don’t deserve it,” Mark says.

They’ve also celebrated nine weddings in their backyard. Their smart house lends itself well to events with its upgraded electronic equipment. With a touch of a button, they can turn on their party lights, water features, music and any other electric device connected to the system.

“We made it simple and easy to live in. We wanted it to feel relaxed and usable,” Mark says. “It’s large, but we made every single room warm, and that’s hard to do with a big house.”

They didn’t sacrifice form for function. For example, it takes five steps to get groceries from the car to the pantry. They have a second laundry room off the master bedroom. And there’s a dumbwaiter to carry things to and from the wine cellar.

“We have weekly date night, occasionally in the wine cellar, because it’s a romantic setting. We are newlyweds, after all, married in 1973,” Mark says.

They also fulfilled their indoor wish list with a chef’s kitchen. There are two islands, one of which has a mesquite wood countertop and double sinks. It’s complete with double warming drawers, two dishwashers, a farm sink facing an outdoor window and a pizza oven.

Although Mark and Bev have poured lots of love into their home, they’re full of ideas for their next building project. They envision an elegant, yet rustic, ranch with horses.
