Tailgating Treasures 8

Fall Fun with Family, Friends and Food

Football and beer are one of those “made for each other” combos that go together like peanut butter and jelly, Batman and Robin, and Arizona and sunshine.

While beer fans certainly don’t need an excuse to quaff their favorite beverage any other time of the year, when the temperatures start to (finally) drop and their favorite teams are hitting the grid-iron, football season is definitely the perfect time to pour and enjoy a cold one.

Doug Ledger, Managing Partner of Scottsdale Beer Company, says he expects several of their beers and stouts to be especially popular with customers this fall. In addition to a wide variety of beers, Scottsdale Beer Company also features plenty of “stick to your ribs” comfort foods that are all made in-house.

“Tom Davidson and I are the founding partners; we opened in January of 2015 with a 220-seat brewpub and a 10BBL brewhouse. We hand-crafted over 75 unique beers in our first year of operation, and sold just under 1000BBLS of beer in that same time,” Ledger says.

“We also have an incredibly talented chef, Alex Schreivogel, who came over to SBC after four years of working under local, renowned chef, Kevin Binkley.”

From whipping up house-made sauces and dressings to smoking and curing all of their own meats and sausages, hungry customers will find plenty of tempting choices at Scottsdale Beer Company to fill them up while imbibing.

“On the beer side, we tend to favor high alcohol beers, with most of our seven beers currently on tap sitting over 7% ABV,” Ledger says.

Tasting Notes:

Texas Tea Double Chocolate
Imperial Stout

Weighing in at 10.8% ABV, this sturdy stout is made with 15 pounds of raw, unsweetened cocoa nibs per batch (that’s almost 1 pound per keg) with 1,200 pounds of grain used per brew.

Ledger’s Notes:

The Texas Tea Double Chocolate Imperial Stout has won two competitions this year: one at the Arizona Strong Beer Festival and one at the Whole Foods Local Beer Cup. Around the brewpub, it’s known as dessert in a glass.

Triple IPA

This 9.3% India Pale Ale is loaded with 70 pounds of hops per batch.

Ledger’s Notes:

Also known as The Dank, we utilize Warrior, Chinook and Columbus hops to create a tongue-numbingly bitter beer that will satisfy even the crankiest hop-addict.

The Downshift IPA

This session IPA is a bit more approachable at 5.2% ABV— “session” literally means people can enjoy many in one session—and is packed full of Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo hops. Blended and balanced beautifully, this is a great starter IPA for the craft beer novice.

Ledger’s Notes:

The Downshift IPA is our best selling beer outside the brewpub, being available at Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort, as well as Dave and Busters, Craft 64 and other local bars and restaurants.

Ben Nevis Scottish IPA

This one-of-a-kind IPA features a peaty, earth-like flavor that pairs beautifully with the Citra, Mosaic and Calypso hops used to finish the creation of the house favorite.

Ledger’s Notes:

This is our most unique beer, as it’s a traditional West Coast IPA, but made with Scottish Edinborough yeast (usually used in our traditional Scottish Ale). At 7.7%, you can enjoy a few.
