Two Thumbs Up 4

Take a Bite Out of Some of the Finest Barbecue and Breakfast in Town at The Thumb

Marking their third year of serving award-winning brisket sandwiches and barbecued pulled pork, The Thumb, formerly called Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market, has carved out another niche, serving some of the finest breakfasts in town.

The Thumb originally opened in 2012, with a unique concept that combined everything in one location. There’s a coffee bar offering scrumptious, fresh baked goods, a unique gift shop, a wide selection of wines, a gas station, a convenience store and a car wash. And, of course, a restaurant that serves delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Th Thumb has already established a reputation for serving the finest barbecue in town, so I was excited to sample some of their other items on the menu. First, I tasted the Stuffed French Toast BS (Breakfast Sandwich), and wow, was it good! The recipe was inspired by a tourist that stopped in from one of the Dakota states and mentioned how good and popular the Toaster Sandwich was back there. So, the kitchen decided to experiment with the recipe until they came up with this great tasting breakfast sandwich. It’s made with two slices of French toast, a sausage patty and scrambled eggs with a hint of maple syrup that gives it a slightly sweet taste. This soft, tasty sandwich is indescribably good and an absolute must-try.

Other breakfast items include sour dough waffles, a breakfast burrito, pulled pork and eggs, breakfast tacos and biscuits and gravy, just to mention a few. On the weekends, you’ll also find eggs benedict and homemade pancakes with bits of bacon on the menu.

Since I love brisket, I just had to get my “fix” while at The Thumb, and decided to try the Texas Smoked Meat Chili, filled with brisket and pork. It was exceptionally good without being too spicy. I enjoyed every bite!

“If it’s not ‘Thumbs Up’ we don’t serve it,” explains General Manager Michael Lawson on overseeing the restaurant to make sure only the best meals are served. And from what I tried, I can attest that everything was great!

Lawson, who moved from Tucson five years ago, brought with him a background that included both car washes and restaurants, making him a perfect fit for The Thumb restaurant, store, gas station and car wash concept.

More Than a Restaurant

I enjoyed browsing through the unique gifts on display in the little boutique section run by Colette, commonly known as “Mama T.” There’s a wonderful assortment of fun, high-end items that can also be included in gift baskets for special occasions. Baskets start at $30 and are great gifts that allow you to combine all those perfect items for hard to buy people.

With the holidays fast approaching, wide selections of hostess gifts are also available, including wine bags, holders, glasses, stoppers and openers. Fun greeting cards and candles are also available, plus much more.

Giving Back

Active in the community, The Thumb sponsors the Boys & Girls Club, the Girl Scouts’ cookie challenge, Notre Dame’s Culinary Festival and the Chaparral High School football team.

So well embraced by their many regulars, The Thumb was nominated to appear on the popular television show Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives this past year. The episode aired earlier in the year and you can still watch it by checking the show’s website for dates.

This fun establishment has also been awarded The Best of Scottsdale by Phoenix magazine; Best North Valley Car Wash by Arizona Foothills magazine and the 2012 Best New Restaurant award by Phoenix magazine.

“We like to make the ordinary extra-ordinary,” states Lawson. “From the car wash to the restaurant, we want to be known for being a friendly place with great food and great service.”

Whether it’s grabbing a coffee and sweet treat on the way to work, stopping in for a business lunch or stopping after school with the kids, our busy lives are constantly making us multi-task, and The Thumb is just the place to go to get a few items checked off your “To Do” list, all at one location.
